A model of the first fuel cell "invented" by William Grove shows how electricity was generated from hydrogen as early as 1839. He experimented with the electrolysis of water to hydrogen and oxygen and discovered that this process could also be reversed. Soon after, he presented a "galvanic gas battery" that could generate electricity through the cold combustion of hydrogen and oxygen. The fuel cell consisted of 2 platinum electrodes that were immersed in sulphuric acid. Hydrogen and oxygen gases were circulated around them. Suitable for ages 4 and up.
