New Dances for a New Society: Choreographing socialism in 1950s-60s East Germany
Dozens of new dances were created in the GDR in the 1950s-60s in order to educate youth and encourage participation in the building of the "new" socialist society, but few were ever recorded or filmed. Many – like the Lipsi, the Orion, or Bambas - were based on or influenced by Latin American dances and other international trends. In the project “Second World Music” we reconstruct the dances and their music as a way of conducting fieldwork in the past. In this kid- and family-friendly workshop, we teach you these “new” dances - perhaps you will find a new you!
